The Importance of Reaching Out For Help With Resume Writing

The Importance of Reaching Out For Help With Resume WritingFor the past ten years or so, I have taught a resume writing series to two graduate students, both of whom are now working in the fields of education and teaching. I always focus on the following:The first step in any career path is defining your goals. This is the first step in knowing how to write a resume. Do you want to teach? Or would you rather work as a social worker?Next, find out what you are best at - be it personal strengths or professional experience. Look for teachers with the skills that are most in demand in your area of expertise. If there are openings in the educational arena, a writer with good personal writing skills may be the key to getting the job.For the second step, list your skills in relation to your current role. Many times, with this information, your reader will see your potential as a teacher, social worker, or a combination of the two.Continue the journey by explaining how you intend to provide these to an employer. If you already hold teaching credentials, you can add a summary of teaching, such as class size and composition, or develop a portfolio of work you've done in your field. If you haven't taught yet but want to work in the field, include the skills that will serve you well, such as organization and time management. Finally, it's important to indicate why you should be hired for the position. What is your greatest strength? Describe your personal traits that will help you provide a valued, positive impact on the people you work with. Be sure to emphasize this so that the reader gets a clear picture of the kind of person you are.A resume that doesn't make the cut will mean wasted time and money, especially if you are interviewing for multiple positions. Don't assume that an employer won't hire you because of your resume; do your research and figure out why they are hiring you. While you may not be in a position to know how to write a resume, it doesn't hurt to be arm ed with some knowledge about resume writing. A couple of dollars spent on some good resume writing books or online training materials will pay dividends for years to come.
